Sarah Der Photography | Chapel Hill Wedding + Portrait Photographer bio picture
  • Hi, I’m Sarah.

I'm a graduate of the University of Richmond, where I studied Studio Art and English. I am married to a scientist, have a pesky and clever French kitten named Toulouse, and just made my big move from snowy Ohio to a quaint, warm and peaceful apartment in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

I quite enjoy taking lovely pictures, but my favorite part of being a photographer is telling stories--of love, of laughter, of commitment, joy and honesty. When I'm not behind the lens, you can always find me reading a very good book, trying my best to cook Indian food, trucking my way through a season of LOST, or traveling to visit friends and family (who can't seem to stay in one place). I think it would be wonderful to meet you for some good coffee. We can get to know one another. So when you're ready, send me a message to say hi, and we'll start from there.

Duke Gardens wedding | Mary and Enrique | Durham, North Carolina

I met Mary a year ago when she agreed to sell me her Ikea dresser off of Craigslist.
When I first moved to Chapel Hill, I had (a fiance, an infested apartment, and one naughty new kitty) no furniture, and I felt determined that furnishing my new place was one essential part to feeling settled in North Carolina. Who would have guessed that sharing common ties to the Midwest (Mary grew up in Michigan, just a hop away from my small town in Ohio) and sending one enthusiastic email to a Craigslist seller would not only get me my first nifty piece of furniture, but also connect me with the generous, beautiful woman that is Mary. I can say, whole heartedly, Mary’s kindness and friendship have had much more to do with Chapel Hill feeling like home, not the acquisition of my new, used Ikea dresser.
It was a joy to photograph Mary and Enrique’s wedding. The ceremony was held at the Duke Gardens in Durham, and since Enrique’s family traveled all the way from Honduras to see the two married, the vows were spoken in both Spanish and English. Afterward, we headed over to the King’s Daughters Inn, and I had just the best time meeting and getting to know M + E’s family and friends.

I cannot say enough about M + E’s commitment to one another. Congratulations you two–I am so blessed by our friendship and am so happy for your future together!

Sarah these are great. And I have to say you are the most unobtrusive photographer I have seen work. Some weddings the photographer is more obvious than the bride.

Loving this one Sarah! I’ll back up what Mary’s aunt has already said – great PJ work!

Sarah,
You helped make the day special with your gentle ways and gifted ability to capture the joy of the day. I especialy loved the black and white shots of Mary Katherine and the view of those loved ones in attendance over the lily pond. A bride picking you as their photographer would be the smartest decision ever next to picking the right groom (as Mary has.) Thank you so much :-)
